An Arlington Brief

Wireless Access Policy and Procedures
A Must for Federal Compliance Reporting

Overview

A strict requirement for federal contractors providing essential services to federal agencies is developing a wide-range of information security and privacy controls. Whatever the compliance mandate being imposed upon federal contractors is - FISMA, FedRAMP, eMASS RMF, DFARS NIST 800-171, CMMC, and more - information security and privacy policies and procedures are a must. Additionally, such documentation must be developed in accordance with none other than NIST SP 800-53, the unquestioned framework that’s been adopted by federal agencies - and federal contractors - since 2005.

Reporting Requirements

Per NIST SP 800-53, “Wireless networking capabilities represent a significant potential vulnerability that can be exploited by adversaries. To protect systems with wireless access points, strong authentication of users and devices along with strong encryption can reduce susceptibility to threats by adversaries involving wireless technologies.”

Specifically, Per AC-18 of NIST SP 800-53, organizations are to “Establish configuration requirements, connection requirements, and implementation guidance for each type of wireless access…” The keyword here is “establish”, which means you need a policy and procedure for AC-18.
